The Renishaw stand at the Big Bang Fair 2013Renishaw attended the Big Bang Fair in London last week to help promote science and engineering to children, parents and teachers from across the UK. The event was attended by over 60,000 people and was well supported by Government, with the opening performed by Business Secretary Vince Cable, and visits also received by the Prime Minister and David Willetts, Minister for Universities and Science.

On Friday, HRH The Duke of York, who is Patron of the organisation Young Engineers, visited several stands including Renishaw, where he was hosted by Dr Tim Prestidge, a Renishaw Director and trustee of Young Engineers, and Lucy Ackland, who joined the company as an apprentice aged 16 and last year achieved a first class Bachelor of Engineering degree.

HRH The Duke of York at the Big Bang Fair“The Duke was interested to learn how committed Renishaw is to skills development”, said Dr Prestidge. “He seemed particularly impressed that this year we are recruiting a record 50 apprentices and 64 graduates, whilst also giving summer and one-year placements to another 100 young people.”

Renishaw has also worked with Young Engineers to develop The Renishaw Engineering Experience, a competition that will give 6 students aged 16-18 the opportunity to spend a fully expensed week looking behind the scenes at various engineering-based organisations. Entry closes at the end of March, with further details at http://www.youngeng.org/index.asp?page=1405

The Big Bang Fair, which took place at ExCeL, London from 14 – 17 March, is the largest celebration of science and engineering for young people in the UK and is designed to inspire young people to make the link between their classroom experiences and a future career. The Fair is delivered by over 170 organisations from the public, private and voluntary sectors, including EngineeringUK, the British Science Association and the Institute of Physics.
